I have never been a big fan of baths or onsen (hot springs), both of which are very popular in Japan. So I've always avoided staying at ryokans (Japanese style inns featuring hot spring baths and traditional Japanese meals). Decided to give one a try recently and actually enjoyed it. The one we stayed at included several hot spring baths, both public and private, and our meals were served in our room. We spent an entire day just taking baths, eating, and relaxing.

Izu Wild Kingdom: Before & After

What was once a roadside attraction featuring stuffed animals from all over the world is now a thrift store filled with junk. The building remains the same as well as some of the interior decorations (fake palm trees and blue painted sky background), but it now houses racks of used dishes, clothing, broken electronics, and stuff that looks like trash. Back in 2004, I was fortunate enough to visit Wild Kingdom just before it closed down for good. I remember us being the only people there, and half the animals were dried up and falling apart. I didn't think it would last long.

We are very excited to announce the release of a brand new Cometdebris figure, Sametan (pronounced saw-meh-tahn). Sametan was designed by Koji Harmon, and sculpted by the talented Kiyoka Ikeda. Sametan stands about 11.5cm tall, and willl be made in Japan of high quality soft vinyl.

With reconnected fins, shoes, jeans, and a fancy spade belt buckle, Sametan is here to help spread the word about the plight of sharks worldwide. Did you know sharks are being overfished in many parts of the world, and many shark populations have declined by as much as 90%? Our oceans are dying, and when they die, so do we.

Every Sametan release will benefit PangeaSeed, a grassroots organization based in Tokyo, Japan dedicated to educating and raising international awareness on the plight of sharks and the destruction of their habitat. PangeaSeed is the first organization in Japan to raise public awareness regarding shark conservation and preservation.

Sametan will debut in San Francisco at PangeaSeed’s inaugural transcontinental art exhibition, Sink or Swim, featuring original works from 30 internationally renowned artists. In the spirit of ocean conservation the Japan-based non-profit organization, PangeaSeed, in collaboration with Spoke Art, is pleased to announce our inaugural transcontinental art exhibition, Sink or Swim, featuring original works from 30 internationally renowned artists such as Dave Kinsey, Josh Keyes, Dan May, Jim Phillips, Jeff Soto and many more. This gathering of widely acclaimed artists from around the globe will address one the biggest threats facing the health of world’s oceans today – the rapid and mass depletion of sharks.

Did you know that scientists estimate global fish stocks will be in full collapse by 2048 if current consumption and destructive fishing practices continue? But what’s even more shocking is that the majority of the ocean’s shark species could be extinct within the next 10-20 years.

With each minute that passes close to 200 sharks are killed, adding up to around 80 million deaths each year. A majority of these sharks are killed only for their fins to satisfy an unsustainable appetite for shark fin soup. In the cruel practice known as “finning,” the shark is hooked and brought aboard the boat where its fins are then cut off and the still alive but limbless animal is tossed back into the sea. With no instruments to move, the helpless shark sinks to the ocean floor and eventually drowns.

Love them or fear them, sharks are essential if we are going to keep the oceans the sustainable resource that they should be. Older than the dinosaurs, for over 400 million years sharks have shaped and balanced the oceans. Since sharks are at the top of the food chain as an “apex predator” they play a vital role in ways average fish do not.

In virtually every part of the ocean sharks keep fish populations healthy and in proper balance. Already in areas where sharks have been over- fished we are seeing a change for the worse. Many species of sharks are now endangered, imagine the consequences for the oceans, and the people who depend on them for survival, if such an important animal is eliminated forever.

PangeaSeed is a Tokyo-based grassroots organization dedicated to educating and raising international awareness on the plight of sharks. Through volunteer activism and various mediums including art, music, film, and photography, PangeaSeed aims to create an open dialog with the global community to develop an understanding of the need to preserve and protect sharks and their habitat.

Sink or Swim is not only a reference to the cruel practice of finning but also a reference to our relationship with the oceans as a whole. As human activity is causing sea levels to rise and coral reefs to die, we see fish stocks rapidly disappearing. The global population must change course if we want future generations to experience the sea as we have. We are living at a crucial time in terms of sustaining the oceans. We may sink and fail, or we may find a way to succeed and swim.

In short, Sink or Swim is an SOS to the world that these issues facing the oceans need attention now more than ever. Following the success of Sink or Swim in Tokyo this past July, San Francisco is next in line to host this unique exhibition. Sink or Swim pays homage to the shark, this most important and beautiful of creatures, while critiquing their demise and offering hope for their future.

Sink or Swim will run in San Francisco from 23 ~ 25 September 2011. In support of proposed bill (AB376) to ban shark fin in California State, Sink or Swim offers the community new perspectives on this widely misunderstood and demonized animal. Also, in addition to raising funds to keep sharks afloat both in Japan and around the world PangeaSeed will donate a percentage of the proceeds from Sink or Swim to organizations aiding animals affected by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Dolphin Watching

Ever since I heard the story of Izumi Ishii's change of heart (see previous post), I've been wanting to take his dolphin watching tour. Last week we decided to try it out. His tours run out of Futo Port in the Izu Peninsula. Futo is a pretty tiny place, a popular spot for diving lessons, and I believe they actually still hunt dolphin there. We boarded Ishii's small boat at noon for a two hour tour of the surrounding area. The weather was a bit cloudy and it rained a little, but the ocean was nice and smooth. Not a bad day for a cruise. Unfortunately, we were unable to locate any dolphins. I was not at all disappointed, just happy to be there supporting Mr. Ishii. The guy is a hero. We'll be back for another try soon. If you're ever in Izu, you should too.

Ultraman vs. Hidora Exhibition

Izu's Shaboten Park was the location for the Ultraman episode "Terror On Route 87" which was filmed in the late 60s. The bird-like statue in the episode was actually an attraction at the park, and is still standing today. Shaboten Park features a live action "Ultra Heroes" show in the summer, and this year they set up a small Ultraman vs. Hidora (the monster in the episode) exhibition. The exhibition showcases Hidora (Hydra in the English version), and includes a small prop display and an Ultraman timeline. There's also a stage set up for photographs and exclusive Ultraman items available. Ultraman geeks might find this pretty interesting.

Maboroshi Hakurankai is a new "theme park" in Izu. It just recently opened (July 16th) at the site of the Izu Green Park, which closed about 10 years back. Izu Green Park was pretty much in ruins (and still is) until Japanese publisher Data House took over and created this crazy attraction. Maboroshi Hakurankai is a "museum" featuring 3 areas in 3 separate buildings of the park: Ancient Civilization, the Showa Period, and Post War Japan. There are no food or souvenir stands, only a tiny bookstore featuring books on topics such as: how to kill yourself, sex techniques, famous killers, penguins, and stupid Americans. I can't even describe this place, everything inside is pretty much recycled junk, a lot of which came from two pretty amazing adult museums which are now closed: the Ganso Kokusai Hihokan and the Toba SF Miraikan, both in Mie Prefecture. The now clothed sex mannequins still stand in their sultry poses but no longer in adult situations. Yeah, they kinda go along with the themes of their respective areas, but half of the displays make no sense at all. Sounds like the last place you'd want to visit on a vacation to Izu. NOT. This place is heaven. There is just so much craziness going on it blows the mind. I can't even begin to describe the strange sensation and fear of just walking through the exhibits. The sights, smells, the mystery, the creepiness. I hope these pictures can better describe the insanity of Maboroshi Hakurankai.

Stayed a night at Tokyo Disney Sea's Hotel Miracosta last week. The Tokyo Disney Resort features three hotels, and Miracosta is the only one connected directly to the park. You can easily visit your room for a short break or to drop off souvenirs, etc. Perfect on a warm day with a knee injury (me). There are several room choices, including views of the parking lots or various parts of the park. The better the view, the higher the price. We decided to go for a view of the Italian part of Disney Sea, directly above the Venetian Gondola attraction. The view was excellent. In addition to the views, the hotel features Disney themed amenities, cable TV, Mickey announcing floors in the elevators, hotel exclusives in the gift shop, more. Definitely worth a visit if you like Disneyland.

Planet Park skatepark just opened a couple months ago in a suburb of Tokyo. I checked it out the other day, and the place was amazing. I've never seen anything quite like this in Japan. It just might be the biggest and best park around. There are areas for all levels and all kinds of terrain. The surface of the entire park is excellent, the smoothest cement I've ever skated. Feels like you're on ice. I only wish they had some transitions in the street area, like a quarter pipe or launch ramp or something. Everything there is banked. Definitely fun though, and well worth the 500 yen entrance fee.

Tokyo Auto Car-Wash Sucks

Had my car washed the other day at Tokyo Auto Car-Wash in Nakano. Got the works: a wash, steam cleaning of the underside, window coating, and body coating. It wasn't cheap. And when I got home, I realized these dumb-asses forgot to wax both tires on the left side. Not only that, they scratched a wheel. How do I know? Because I always clean them myself. By hand. When I returned to complain, they said they'd wax the tires, and denied scratching the wheel. Like I'm dumb enough to let these guys touch my car again? I didn't let them do the tires, and demanded they do something about the wheel. They again denied it, and refused to do anything besides wipe it off. Not sure how many of you reading this live in Tokyo and have a car. But if you do, do yourself a favor and avoid Tokyo Auto Car-Wash. They suck. And their work is totally not worth the money.

Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support (JEARS) is a collaboration of three established and registered no kill animal rescue NPOs in Japan. The intention behind the creation of JEARS is to coordinate rescue and support efforts for animals in crisis due to the March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami in Northern Japan.

Cometdebris is selling this custom Tokoji Seijin to benefit JEARS and their efforts to rescue and support animals in the disaster area. This custom Tokoji was done by Bwana Spoons and Cometdebris. In the online store now.

Kawazu cherry blossoms bloom about two months earlier than the more popular Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms. And they stay in bloom for up to a month, rather than about a week or so for Somei Yoshino. Here are some pics from the annual Kawazu Sakura Festival, held in the small town of Kawazu in the Izu Peninsula. We were there earlier this week and they just started to bloom. I imagine they'll be in full bloom at the end of the month.

In the eighties and early nineties I used to make skate obstacles all the time. Launch ramps, quarter pipes, wall ramps, boxes, rails, and half pipes. My backyard was a mini skatepark. In Japan it’s pretty much impossible due to space and cost issues. I think it would cost three or four times to make one there. Anyway, since I was going to be in the states for nearly a month, I thought I’d try and make one again to pass some of the time. A day and a half later, my quarter pipe was done. The most challenging part I think was deciding on the transition and coping placement. In the end I went with a 7 foot transition (radius). Unfortunately, by the time it was finished my muscles were too sore to shred it. Just got a few pivots and sweepers in. And then it snowed. Now I’m waiting for a sunny day.

The show featured over 100 custom figures and art pieces by Kiyoka and Naoya of Gargamel, Bwana Spoons, David Horvath and Sun-Min, Le Merde, Scrappers, and myself. Kiyoka and I attended the opening and were very excited to talk toys with all the kaiju geeks. Thanks to everyone who came out to the show. And a special thanks to Kirby and Whitney of Rotofugi.

Nogawa Park is huge, with lots of green, trees, and a river running through it. It features facilities for barbecuing, sports, and even has a small skate park. And just a short drive from home. Bwana and I visited the other day, took a little walk along the river, and did a little skating.

I have this image of Shirakaba Lake being a bustling resort area during the 80s, with lots of hotels lining the artificial lake, souvenir shops, and small restaurants. Of the dozen or so hotels in the area, fewer than half of them remain open. And the ones that didn't make it stand there rotting through the years. It's amazing how they allow them to stay there, only boarding up a few windows and doors. Looking through some of the windows, you can still see the lobbies and coffee shops exactly the way there were the day the doors shut for good.

Saw these silhouettes on the window of a supermarket near Tateshina, Nagano Prefecture. At first glance, I thought they were stickers that some kids might have placed there. Closer inspection revealed that they were small frogs. I guess they were attracted to the warmth.

Some pics of last week's trip to Enoshima. Enoshima is a tiny island about an hour or so from Tokyo. It's very hilly, and the view from the top is pretty nice. Lots and lots of cats there too.

Kappa Ten

Kappa Ten is happening again this summer. This is a group show featuring kappa inspired work by a variety of artists. I will have a few custom Tokoji Seijin figures on dispay, as well as some photographs of Tokoji in his natural environment. Show runs from July 22 to August 3, at Artist Garden Gallery & Cafe in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Click the postcard above for a closer look at the map.

Izu Peninsula

Just got back from a few days in the Izu Peninsula. Izu is famous for its hot springs, and features mountains, and both rocky and sandy beaches. We intended to find fireflies but didn't have much luck, we only saw one. Instead, we saw lots of stray cats, insects, and a cute swan family.

Just received Slider magazine from Amazon Japan today and man was I disappointed with this dumb-ass cover. Slider is a new skateboard culture magazine or "mook" as they say in Japan. For those familiar with 80s skateboarding you might be able to recognize the Bones Ripper graphic in the background there. Amazon actually listed the magazine with the Bones Ripper on the cover, so I was getting pretty stoked. I guess the publisher made a last minute change and decided to go with the singer of the goofy boy band Tokio. Anyway, huge FAIL in my opinion. On to the contents. There's a rad article on the original Bones Brigade and Powell Peralta including current photos and interviews with all members, awesome section on 80s skateboards, stickers, clothes, fashion, etc. Definitely worth getting if you don't mind looking at the SUCKY cover every time you read it.

Tokyo Disney Resort

Recently got to spend a night at Tokyo Disney Resort. Rode the Monorail for the first time, not super exciting as the view is not that great. Though the Monorail at California Disneyland is shorter, at least it goes through the middle of the park. I did get to see a huge Taro Okamoto sculpture though. We went on a weekday, after a major holiday (Golden Week), and it rained a little. No people! Fast passes were not required as all the lines were super short. Tower of Terror x4, Indiana Jones Adventure x4, Raging Spirits x2. Unfortunately Journey To The Center Of The Earth was closed. Next time.

We've just finalized an amazing list of 40 artist commitments for May's Monsters in the Mangroves Group Show. We will have works submitted by established and up and coming artists, both local and from as far away as Japan and Korea. This truly will be a world class affair, and Super7 is very proud to be exhibiting in the city of St. Petersburg, Florida, a city with a vast artistic heritage and home to Florida's Museum of Fine Arts, The Florida International Museum, The Holocaust Museum, and The Salvador Dali Museum.

My first trip to Alcatraz Island was a little wet, but fortunately the main tour happens indoors, in the cellhouse. Guests get a guided tour with headphones, and it takes about 40 minutes or so. The tour was actually pretty interesting, and takes you through the entire cellhouse. For other parts of the island, you're free to walk around on your own. Very cool if you're into ghost towns, haikyo, stuff like that. My only regret is not booking the tour sooner, we wanted to go earlier in the day but were stuck with a mid afternoon ferry. It tends to sell out pretty fast so if you're planning a visit, reserve online in advance.

Stayed a few nights at Beaufort House in Asheville, North Carolina last week. Beaufort House was built over a hundred years ago and is now a bed and breakfast. Our room was great, and so was our vegan breakfast.

Tokyo to Charlotte

Had the worst flight experience ever the other day. Took a flight from Narita to Washington, DC. That went ok. The flight arrived late so we missed our connection to Charlotte. Waited 7 hours for the next flight to Charlotte, it was delayed an extra hour, and then couldn't even get on. Ended up getting a hotel in DC that United refused to pay for because our late flight was an "air traffic control" problem and not their responsibility. Slept about 4 hours and got the first flight out. So darn tiring. We have 5 more flights on this trip and totally not looking forward to them. Will avoid United in the future, their service sucks.
