Fruit Orchestra
This is the "Fruit Orchestra" playground at the Hamamatsu Fruit Park in Shizuoka Prefecture. The highlight of the playground is the long slide extending from the top of the four story high pineapple. As it's designed for kids, the slope is pretty mild. I wasn't able to make it down without stopping one or twice along the way. The Fruit Park also has several groves, where you can pick your own fruit depending on the season.

Cute Samurai Award
Meet Hachimaru, Nagoya City's samurai mascot. He just happened to be visiting Matsumoto Castle last week while I was there. Hachimaru was born the same time as Nagoya City about 400 years ago. He has 3 dorky friends which fortunately did not come to Matsumoto with him. Hachimaru was super friendly, throwing poses and taking photos with anyone who wanted one.
Goofy Mascot Award
This is Mokko, mascot character of the Alps Azumino National Government Park in Nagano Prefecture. She's 14 years old and likes birdwatching. Nice try, but not even close. This character is far from cute, which is a requirement for any mascot in Japan. The park was great, just please send Mokko to the wood chipper.

Painting With Dehara
Bwana and I visited Dehara other day, where we each painted Dehara's Satoshi-kun figure. It was pretty fun painting together, kinda felt like kids in art class. After painting, we traded figures and got stuffed at a nearby izakaya (Japanese bar/restaurant). The figures from left to right: Satoshi-kun by Bwana, Koji by Dehara, Kappa Hunter Satoshi-kun by Koji, and Bwana by Dehara.

Dehara & David Have Mono!
Dehara & David Have Mono! opened tonight at Stitch Tokyo in Dakanyama. The show features black and white paintings, illustrations, plush, and figures by both artists, as well as some exclusive soft vinyl releases. David Horvath's new My Friend Dave soft vinyl figure made it's debut today in a variety of bright colors, and I was stoked to find Dehara's new hand painted Kappa-chan strap available as well. Dehara & David Have Mono! runs through September 27th.

Toy Karma 2
From Rotofugi's Toy Karma website:
What is Toy Karma? Well, in our case, it’s an art exhibit featuring artists expressing their love for classic Japanese toys. But it’s so much more than that. As Mark Nagata, founder of Max Toy Company and curator of this exhibit explains on his blog, it’s the idea that if you’re honest in your dealings that one toy that you’ve always dreamed of getting will eventually come to you. For many serious toy collectors it’s a guideline, a mantra and yes, even a lifestyle. This exhibit pays homage to the mysterious force and power that toys have over us.
Toy Karma, the exhibit, is held every other year at Rotofugi Gallery, Chicago. The first Toy Karma exhibit was held in September 2007. Toy Karma 2 (aka TKII) will be held at Rotofugi Gallery September 5-20, 2009. We hope you can join us!

Modest Mouse Supports Sea Shepherd
Modest Mouse - King Rat
From Sea Shepherd's website:
Modest Mouse released the highly anticipated music video for “King Rat” directed by Heath Ledger on August 4, 2009. “King Rat” is a track off their new No One’s First, And You’re Next album. Proceeds from the download of the music video on iTunes the first month of its release will be donated to the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society to support their ocean conservation campaigns.
The video, produced by THE MASSES, focuses on the illegal commercial whale hunts taking place off the coast of Australia each year, and has been released with the support and advocacy of Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse.
Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is honored to be connected with this important work and hopes that it brings attention to the illegal slaughter of whales in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary.
Says Captain Paul Watson, “Modest Mouse is bringing an important issue to their fans via this music video and raising awareness about illegal whaling in a provocative and effective manner.”
