Yamanashi Bugs

In Yamanashi we also visited the Omurasaki Center, a large park, garden, and insect museum. The museum featured several bug displays, some live beetles, and a huge outdoor caged area full of native insects. We were a little late in the season to see most of the serious bugs (that might have been to our advantage), but we did find a few crazy guys including this huge praying mantis. My mom was super into them and kept wanting to either hold them or let them hang out on her arms. I can't imagine how crazy this place must be in the middle of summer when all the bugs are in action. I'll have to go back and see next year. Such a cool place and admission is only 400 yen!

Mantises are some of the coolest insects (though those giant beetles are really sweet too)...I remember catching big ones like that as well as baby ones that you could barely make out at my grandparents' place as a child. They look like little insect centaurs...
